Hagar Pitts of Newbern, North Carolina, seeks information about her sons Solomon Gustus, Horace Gustus, and James Henry Griffin. The three sons were formerly enslaved by Judge Gaskins in Newbern.
Around 1845, Judge's son, Alexander Gaskin, sold Solomon and Horace Gustus to a speculator named John Gillislee, who took them to Alabama. Solomon was seven and Horace was eight at the time. Eight years later, Gaskin sold James Henry Griffin to John Harvey of Newbern; Harvey later sold James Henry to a speculator named "Daniels." James Henry was ten years old at that time. Daniels took James Henry to Georgia.
Hagar Pitts writes that there is an inheritance owed to her children and asks that information be related to her or her attorney, E. W. Carpenter of Newbern. This undated advertisement appears in the September 1, 1871 issue of National Freedman's Savings Bank, a Washington, D.C. paper.
